Ironwood Blitzen (S1, G4, V) was born on our farm on July 6, 2001. His dam is SF Saska, a mare we bought through Carol Rivoire’s consignment program. We had the pleasure of spending a week at Beaver Dam Farm’s driving program and driving Carol’s stallion, Gjest, for the session. Gjest’s forwardness, flexibility, and work ethic were amazing.
Blitzen is a young horse and starting his career as a stallion. Blitzen won the 3 year old stallion class at the 2004 Ontario Fjordhorse Show. International Fjord expert and judge Bob Von Bon gave him good marks for conformation. He is winning good ribbons in Fjord shows and open shows both under saddle and in driving. He was evaluated by the NFHR in Winona, MN. He received a high red (77) on conformation, and a silver medallion of quality, level two for passing his English riding (73) and driving (83) tests. He received a blue ribbon for driving. In August, 2007 he took his intro draft test and earned a 91.5. This is among the highest scores ever posted for this test in the American evaluation system. Blitzen also took his advanced draft test and earned a red ribbon (76.5). At present, he has medallions of quality for silver, level 1 and for gold, level four. He will continue to pursue a gold medallion level 1 in 2008.
Blitzen also participated in the horse shows and received a number of good ribbons in competitive classes. He has a friendly and well behaved demeanor, which bodes well for performance. Blitzen recently completed his NFHR Versatility awards by winning Training Test 2 in a field of 11 at the Cedar Run Dressage Show. Combined with his blue ribbons in driving and draft, Blitzen has shown the quality of his performance in three distinct areas. He’ll continue showing at Training Level dressage with Diana Phillips and will be evented at the Starter Novice level by Margaret in 2008. His next goal is the NFHR Excellence Award which requires performance at horse shows.
We have bred Blitzen several times in the last four years. He has produced some nice babies -- 8 colts and 3 fillies. Eight of the foals are brown duns, two of the foals are RED duns out of brown dun mares and one foal is a white dun out of a white dun mare.. So he throws color! But best of all his is personality. Blitzen is easy to handle, amiable and quiet. People are amazed that he is a stallion. He passes on his good mind and temperament to his offspring.
Stud Fee for 2008: $500; includes $100 nonrefundable booking fee. Balance due when mare confirms pregnant LFG. Blitzen is licensed for AI and has successfully bred via transported semen.
